Ivermectin 3 mg: Indications and Dosing for Human Parasitic Infections
Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication widely used in the treatment of various human parasitic infections. The 3 mg tablet formulation is commonly prescribed for conditions such as onchocerciasis (river blindness), strongyloidiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, scabies, pediculosis (head lice), and certain filarial infections. It acts by binding to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in nerve and muscle cells of parasites, leading to paralysis and death of the organism.
The dose of Ivermectin 3mg depends on body weight and the type of infection. For most indications, the recommended dose is 150–200 mcg/kg orally as a single dose, which is equivalent to one 3 mg tablet for every 15–20 kg of body weight. In onchocerciasis, treatment is usually repeated every 6–12 months. For strongyloidiasis, a single dose may be sufficient, but in some cases, repeat dosing is required after two weeks. In scabies and lice infestations, ivermectin may be given as a single dose repeated after 7–14 days to ensure eradication of the parasites.Ivermectin should be taken on an empty stomach with water for best absorption. Clinical supervision is important to adjust dosing in children, elderly patients, or individuals with comorbidities.
